How Lichen nitidus is treated?

General tips

  • Lichen nitidus is a benign condition and it is usually asymptomatic.
  • Treatment of lichen nitidus may not be necessary; the disease goes away within one or several years.
  • Thers is no defenitive treatment for lichen nitidus.

Medical treatment options of lichen nitidus

  • Topical corticosteroids: Fluocinonide 0.05% cream twice daily.
  • Calcineurin inhibitors : Tacrolimus 0.1% twice-daily for 4 weeks.
  • Topical dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) 1 % every 2 wks*.
  • Generalized lichen nitidus
    • Cyclosporine 2 mg/kg/day.
    • Isotretinoin 40 mg/day*.
    • Generalized lichen nitidus in children : Cetirizine dihydrochloride 5 m daily and levamisole 50 mg on alternate days for 4 weeks.
    • Astemizole 10 mg daily.
    • Isoniazid
  • Palmoplantar lichen nitidus
    • Acitretin 50 mg daily.

Astemizole is long acting non sedative H1 antihistamine, its manufacture was discontinued in 1999 due to an increased risk of developing cardiac dysrhythmias .

    • PUVA.
    • Sun exposure.
