What is erythrasma?

Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial infection of the skin that is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium minutissimum. It is most commonly seen in the intertriginous areas, such as the groin, under the breasts, and in the folds of the skin. The skin in the affected area is typically red, scaly.

What are the symptoms of erythrasma?

The most common symptoms of erythrasma are:

  • Red, scaly skin
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Unpleasant odor

Who is at risk for erythrasma?

Erythrasma is more common in people who:

  • Have diabetes
  • Are obese
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Are sweating excessively
  • Wear tight-fitting clothing

How is erythrasma diagnosed?

Your doctor will likely diagnose erythrasma based on your medical history, a physical exam. A device called wood`s light sometimes is needed to confirm the daignosis.

How is erythrasma treated?

Erythrasma is usually treated with topical or oral antibiotics. Topical antibiotics are applied to the affected area of skin, while oral antibiotics are taken by mouth. The most common antibiotics used to treat erythrasma are erythromycin, clindamycin, and fusidic acid. Topical antifungals may be also prescibed.

How long does it take to clear up erythrasma?

It usually takes about 7 days to clear up erythrasma with treatment. However, it can take longer in people who have diabetes or other chronic medical conditions.

How can I prevent erythrasma?

There are a few things you can do to help prevent erythrasma, including:

  • Keep the affected area clean and dry.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid sweating excessively.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid sharing towels and other personal items.
