Nicotinamide
Indications
- Prophylaxis and treatment of pellagra.
- Autoimmune bullous dermatoses ( pemphigoid, pemphigus, dermatitis herpetiformis, and linear IgA dermatosis).
- Bullous pemphigoid : 500 mg three times daily, start with 200–300 mg three times daily+ 500 mg tetracycline four times daily.
- Dietary supplement useful in acne vulgaris :Systemic nicotinamide+ azelaic acid, folic acid, copper, and pyridoxine.
- Ageing : topical niacinamide.
- Isoniazid-induced pellagra-like skin lesions.
- Hartnup disease :50–300 mg/day improves dermatologic and neurologic manifestations.
- Granuloma annulare : 500 mg TID.
- Actinic keratosis :500 mg twice daily to prevent new Aks.
- Wound healing.
- Sunscreen :Topical niacinamide.
Dosage
- Standard dosage range : 300–500 mg TID.
Monitoring
- Liver function tests in patients receiving long-term, high-dose therapy.
Side effects
- Schizophrenia,with doses of 3–12 g daily.
- Headache and GI complaints.
- Hepatotoxicity(extremely rare).
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C.
