Tinea versicolor treatment options
Tips
- For children only topical treatments are recommended.
- Depigmentation usually persists for several months after the treatment.
- Sun exposure may be used for repigmentation.
Topical ( limited Tinea versicolor)
- Ketoconazole 2% shampoo:
- used as a single application or daily for 3 days.
- The shampoo is left in place for 5 minutes and then rinsed thoroughly.
- Selenium Sulfide Suspension 2.5%.
- Applied for 10 minutes every day for 7 consecutive days.
- It can be also applied once each week for a total of 4 weeks.
- Bifonazole: Once per day for weeks.
- Miconazole: Once per day for weeks.
- Econazole: Once per day for weeks.
- Clotrimazole: Once per day for weeks.
- Cyclopiroxilamine: once–twice a day for 2 weeks.
- zinc pyrithione shampoo: once a day for 2–4 weeks.
- Propylene glycol, 50 % in water twice daily for 2–4 weeks.
- Terbinafine 1% cream twice daily for 2–3 weeks.
Oral treatment(extensive Tinea versicolor)
- Itraconazole : 200 mg/day for 7 days or 100 mg/day for 2 weeks.
- Fluconazole: 300 mg/week for 2 to 4 weeks.
Recurrent cases prophylaxis
- ketoconazole 2% shampoo: Once-weekly before summer may help to prevent recurrences.
- Prophylactic pyrithione zinc-based soap or selenium sulfate-based soap can be used once or twice per week for months.
