Tips

  • For children only topical treatments are recommended.
  • Depigmentation usually persists for several months after the treatment.
  • Sun exposure may be used for repigmentation.

Topical ( limited Tinea versicolor)

  • Ketoconazole 2% shampoo:
    • used as a single application or daily for 3 days.
    • The shampoo is left in place for 5 minutes and then rinsed thoroughly.
  • Selenium Sulfide Suspension 2.5%.
    • Applied for 10 minutes every day for 7 consecutive days.
    • It can be also applied once each week for a total of 4 weeks.
  • Bifonazole: Once per day for weeks.
  • Miconazole: Once per day for weeks.
  • Econazole: Once per day for weeks.
  • Clotrimazole: Once per day for weeks.
  • Cyclopiroxilamine: once–twice a day for 2 weeks.
  • zinc pyrithione shampoo: once a day for 2–4 weeks.
  • Propylene glycol, 50 % in water twice daily for 2–4 weeks.
  • Terbinafine 1% cream twice daily for 2–3 weeks.

Recurrent cases prophylaxis

  • ketoconazole 2% shampoo: Once-weekly before summer may help to prevent recurrences.
  • Prophylactic pyrithione zinc-based soap or selenium sulfate-based soap can be used once or twice per week for months.
